National Armory – Peyton

Yesterday, we went to the National Armory in Leeds, U.K. It is where they keep all the royal armor. There were artifacts from the ancient roman time all the way up to present day.

They had a play going on at 12:30, so we waited around for that. During the play, there were two dudes demonstrating how they would fight with a type of longsword in medieval times. They showed how back then, they would sometimes hold the sword using the handle to jab it into the opponents. One of the guys died while we were watching, so we had to leave… Wait… That isn’t right, nobody died. They said that the swords weren’t real, because the one that they were based off of was in a museum somewhere else in the U.K.

But remember, it is a museum, so it wasn’t just the play. It explained how in medieval times, their helmets with the little eye slits were really, really hard to see out of. There was a model where you could see out of one of the helmets. It wasn’t a real helmet though, because that would defy the laws of museums. I tried it out and there was a little screen on the other side showing a war scene. I could barely see anything.

They had lots of other things too, but i didn’t really pay too much attention to those things. We really only did those two things and those other things that I mentioned in the last sentence.

  1. Peyton, I enjoyed your report. I’ve always wondered how men could fight wearing all that armor and tiny slits in their helmets to see through! I’m glad you tried that out. Abrazos from San Pancho. Lizzie
