The Things People Say

As we’ve been to different places and experience different foods, cultures, languages, and people there have been some moments that have stuck out more than others. A couple of them are things people have said to us in conversation that we continue to chuckle about and have become quite the inside joke amongst us.

Most people we’ve encountered don’t seem to know where Nevada is when we say we’re from Nevada, so we have resorted to saying that we are close to California. During the course of one of our conversations with a shopkeeper in Rome, we were asked what most people ask us, “where are you from?” This time, as we explained that we were from a place close to California we were met with a broad smile and excitement as he said, “OOH! California! You have big indian!” To which, we weren’t quite sure what to do with. In the end we said, “Uhhh thank you?” and we went on our way. I’m still curious as to what he meant by that.

Another time my mom and I were out having a quiet dinner at a Thai restaurant in Cyprus (I know, right, Thai food in Cyprus? Who would have thought?). The waiter asked us where we were from and I proceeded to say we were from a place near California. He mentioned hearing our different accent and then went to go get our food. A little while later, our waiter comes by and says with a big smile, waving his hands wildly, “I love hearing your accent! It is music to my ears!” Mom and I looked at each other and thanked him chuckling to ourselves as we have never heard anyone say our accent was music to their ears before!
