I’m sitting on the plane headed home thinking about our week in Stockholm. Wednesday, the kids and I went into town and I fell in love with the city. The cobblestone streets and little boutique shops in tall multicolored buildings were just breathtaking. I think there were more canals with boats throughout the city than there were streets. I can see why Stockholm is called Venice of the north. While we waited for my husband to get off of work, the kids and I went to the Museum of Medieval Times. It wasn’t much to look at as we walked in, but as we wound our way through the dark brick tunnel we were greeted with quite a site! It was like we were walking into a village set in the medieval times. There were shops and buildings and a barn and a church—it was quite spectacular. It definitely made one of my top favorite museums to take the kids, to date. After meeting my husband, we took the kids to a museum called the Vasa Museum. It was named after a ship that sunk in the 1660s. We walked in and there was this massive boat, all but 10% of it was original parts that had been meticulously restored and put together into their original form. This thing was huge and beautiful! At the time it was built, the plan was to have it be the model for all the Swedish military vessels. It was known to have the biggest firepower of any other ship built at that time. And, for the 15-20 minutes, it was in the water, it was a wonderful sight to behold…then it tipped over and sank after hitting a couple of large squalls (or waves). It was beautiful, but not built to last…or sail apparently :). Anyways, this was a great museum to take the kids to as well. There were 7 stories, some of which had models of what it looked like in some of the ship’s cabins, one floor showed the tools the early divers used to dive down into the depths of the sea to recover what they could of the ship—we’ve come a long way, people! As we sat down to dinner, I looked at my kids and my husband, and said, I think we should do this. He looked at me and said the same thing back to me. So, I think we’re going to set the ball rolling and see if all the chips fall into place for us to move to Europe. I feel good about it. It’s a peace I was hoping to have. All of our kids are excited…our oldest is a bit bummed he won’t get to play baseball for a season—I think he’ll survive though. The next evening, my husband and I headed into Old Town together while the kids stayed back at the apartment. We walked the beautiful streets for one last time—I sure hope we can come back. We had a wonderful traditional Swedish dinner outside and enjoyed the quiet evening. Sweden, you are a lovely country and your people are especially welcoming. I hope to see you again. |
